How Do I Use the Depth Time Recorder?

The Depth Time Recorder is a fundamental but crucial auxiliary recording device in oil logging operations. The core function is to synchronously, continuously and precisely record the position (depth) and corresponding time of the downhole logging tools.

Working principle- It works by measuring the movement of the cable (logging cable). The cable is wound around a measuring wheel. The rotation of the measuring wheel is converted into an electrical signal by a mechanical or photoelectric encoder, thereby calculating the release/retraction length of the cable, that is, the depth. Meanwhile, the high-precision clock inside the system will mark a timestamp for each depth point.

Data output- It generates a data file containing the "time-depth" correspondence. This file itself does not contain any formation parameters (such as resistivity, density, etc.), but it provides a unified depth and timing reference for all the data collected by downhole instruments.

It is an electronic data recording device specifically designed for logging operations, capable of synchronously collecting key parameters such as depth, time, tension of the drilling cable and drilling speed, and transmitting them in real time to the ground computer via wired or wireless means for display, storage and subsequent processing. The core idea is to associate "depth" with "time", and to completely record the downhole logging process in the form of a time series, achieving depth correction and data reconstruction in the later stage.

The application of Depth Time Recorder runs through the entire logging operation.

◆ Conventional cable logging- Used for depth positioning of open-hole Wells and casing Wells to ensure the accuracy of the logging curve depth.

◆ Production logging- When monitoring the dynamics of downhole fluids, precise depth is crucial for determining the liquid-producing layer location.

◆ Perforation operation- Provide precise depth control in perforation, salvage and other operations to avoid accidents

◆ Logging while drilling- Combined with the logging while drilling system, it records the position and time of the drill bit in real time and supports geological guidance.

◆ Special operations- Such as cable formation testing and underground television imaging, all require it to ensure the accuracy of depth and time.

Connection Guide is as below follows:

Connect the computer, the Memory Time Depth Recorder, and the Martin Decker as shown in the diagram above, paying attention to the definition of the cables.

After the connection, we open the A-One Oil test software：

1. Click SEARCH FTDI:USB;

2. Then click in turn,

→Usb Connect

→Read Flash ID

→List Log File

3. After the dialog box on the right indicates OK,

click ERASE All Block, after clearing the historical data,

click the bottom right corner Depth Show, enter the Depth

Time display window.

4. Click Start, start recording the depth of lowering

well;

5. After the tool is out of the well,click Stop,

stop recording;

6. After stopping the recording, we click in sequence again;

 → Usb Connect

 → Read Flash ID

 → List Log File

7. Select the data you need to export, and change the file name. Attention: please do not delete or modify .dat suffix;

click again Read Log file;

8. Finally, we will transmit the exported file to the interpretation engineer.

The Depth Time Recorder is the "space-time anchor" of oil well logging.

It does not directly detect oil and gas, but all the oil and gas information it detects must rely on it for location.

It has solved the fundamental problem of precisely "nailing" physical measurement values that change over time at the correct depth position thousands of meters underground.

Although the depth sources have become more diverse with the development of logging while drilling technology, in the dominant field of cable logging, it remains an indispensable basic equipment. The accuracy and reliability of its data directly determine the success or failure of the entire logging project.
