How Is A Spot-Measurement Gyro Inclinometer Measured?

The Spot-Measurement Gyro Inclinometer is a precision tool that measures the wellbore trajectory direction based on the fixed-axis and precession properties of high-speed rotating gyro. Its core feature is "point measurement", that is, measures and records data in a stationary state, then lifts the cable to the next measurement point for another stationary measurement, and so on. It does not rely on the Earth's magnetic field and thus is not disturbed by ferromagnetic substances such as casing and drill pipe. It is widely used in the construction processes such as wellbore trajectory measurement, directional lateral drilling and directional perforation in the harsh working environment of oil fields.

Measuring Process

The measurement of a Spot-Measurement Gyro Inclinometer is a precise and step-by-step process. The core steps of its workflow include:

Ground Initialization (Seeking North)

Before the tool is lowered into the well, a north-seeking operation must be carried out on the ground. After the gyroscope rotates at high speed, its axis will precisely align with the true north direction, establishing a direction reference for measurement.

Going Down the Well & Spot Measurement

◆ After initialization, the instrument is lowered to the first measurement point at the bottom of the well through the logging cable.

◆ After reaching the predetermined position, it must come to a complete stop (usually it takes 1-2 minutes to stabilize).

◆ In a stationary state, the gyroscope system inside the instrument senses the components of the Earth's rotation axis in the instrument coordinate system, while the accelerometer measures the well inclination Angle (tilt Angle) and the gravity tool face Angle.

◆ The system calculates and records the well inclination Angle, azimuth Angle (relative to true north), and tool face Angle of this point.

Lifting the Cable & Repetition

◆ After completing the measurement and data storage at one point, lift the cable up a certain distance (such as 10m, 20m or 30m, depending on the measurement requirements) to reach the next measurement point.

◆ Repeat the above process of "static - measurement - storage" until the measurement of all well sections is completed.

Data Recovery & Processing

◆ After the measurement is completed, lift the tool out of the wellhead and play back all the point measurement data stored in the tool's internal memory through the interface.

◆ Process, correct and interpret these data to ultimately generate a wellbore trajectory report.

Application Fields

Based on the technical features, the Spot-Measurement Gyro Inclinometer is mainly applied in:

Logging of Casing Wells/Old Wells

Accurately measure the wellbore trajectory of the existing casing for productivity assessment or subsequent operation design.

Directional Drilling

◆ Casing Window Opening Side Drilling- During the window opening point and the initial skewing stage, precisely monitor the tool face Angle to ensure the accuracy of the window opening direction and trajectory.

◆ Mud Motor Orientation- Provides high-precision tool face Angle references for downhole mud motors, guiding the orientation of the drill bit.

Wellbore Trajectory Verification & Remeasurement

When there is doubt about the measurement data in a magnetic interference environment, used for verification and calibration.

Scientific Drilling & Geothermal Wells

As reliable means of azimuth measurement in certain specific geological conditions or applications.

Summary

The Spot-Measurement Gyro Inclinometer with its advantages of anti-magnetic interference, high precision and easy operation, is widely used in fields such as oil logging, geological exploration and engineering construction. Its measurement principle combines gyroscopic orientation and Angle sensing technology, which can provide reliable data support in complex environments. With the continuous advancement of technology, the development of this instrument in the directions of intelligence and automation will further expand its application prospects.
